Safety Tips for Working With Industrial Adhesives
Physical and Toxic Hazards
There can be both physical and toxic hazards when working with adhesives. Solvent-based adhesives can be flammable and explosive, while thermal adhesives like hot glue can create contact burns. Further, the blend of ingredients in certain adhesives can be toxic, causing skin irritations, allergic reactions, and chemical burns. Volatile Organic Compounds can also enter the body through the respiratory system, causing irritation and absorption of toxins.
How to Work With Industrial Adhesives
Before working with adhesives, read the manual or packaging for safety instructions specific to the adhesive being used. Once you have mastered the safety manual, you’re ready to begin.
When working with any industrial adhesive, it’s essential to wear protective clothing to protect yourself from toxic ingredients within the glue, including:
- Latex gloves
- Dust masks
- Safety glasses
Be Cautious
Training is critical in understanding the risks associated with adhesives. Always ensure that you work in a well-ventilated space and that air filtration equipment is maintained in a workplace that regularly uses adhesives to avoid inhaling toxic fumes. Should exposed skin or eyes come in contact with the adhesive, wash hands thoroughly with soap and water. After drying, apply a skin moisturizer to remove any remaining adhesive. If adhesive comes in contact with the eyes, wash both eyes under running water for 10 minutes. Afterward, cover the eyes with a bandage and consult an eye specialist.
